"Rocket Human" (officially titled "Rocket Man (I Think It's Going to Be a Long, Long Time)") is a song written by English musician Elton John and songwriter Bernie Taupin, and performed by John. It was originally released on 17 April 1972 in the Usa, as the atomic number 82 single to John's album Honky Château. The vocal first charted in the Great britain on 22 April, rising to No. 2 in the U.k. Singles Chart and No. 6 in the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming a major hit single for John.[1]

On 21 Jan 2022, the song was certified double platinum by the British Phonographic Manufacture (BPI) for sales and streams of i,200,000 digital downloads and streaming equivalent sales. With sales of 3 one thousand thousand in the US the vocal was certified triple platinum by the Recording Manufacture Association of America (RIAA). Rolling Stone lists it at No. 149 of its 500 greatest songs of all time.[2]

The song has been covered by many artists, most notably by Kate Bush in 1991 with a reggae-tinged version, and past Portuguese singer David Fonseca in 2007. John himself assisted producers Pnau and singer Dua Lipa with her 2021 mashup song "Cold Heart (Pnau remix)" which draws from "Rocket Human" along with other songs by John. William Shatner's unintentionally funny spoken-word version from 1978 has been widely parodied.

Background [edit]

The song was inspired by the brusque story "The Rocket Human" in The Illustrated Human by Ray Bradbury, and echoes the theme of David Bowie'southward 1969 song "Space Oddity" (both recordings were produced by Gus Dudgeon).[three] Taupin has denied that the Bowie song was an inspiration, but has acknowledged borrowing from Pearls Earlier Swine'south 1970 "Rocket Human being," written past Tom Rapp,[4] which was too influenced by the Bradbury story. According to an business relationship in Elizabeth Rosenthal's book His Vocal: The Musical Journey of Elton John, the song was inspired by Taupin's sighting of either a falling star or a distant airplane.[5]

The song describes a Mars-bound astronaut'southward mixed feelings at leaving his home in lodge to do his job. Rosenthal'southward account goes on to chronicle that the notion of astronauts no longer being perceived as heroes, simply in fact as an "everyday occupation", led Taupin to the song'south opening lines: "She packed my bags final night, pre-flight. Zero hour: nine a.m. And I'm gonna exist high as a kite past so."[5]

Musically, the vocal is a highly arranged classical stone ballad anchored by piano, with atmospheric texture added by synthesizer (played on the recording by engineer Dave Hentschel) and processed slide guitar. It is too known for being the get-go song in John's catalogue to feature what would become the signature backing vocal combination of his band at the time, Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone.[ citation needed ]

The starting time stanza of "Rocket Human" was thought of by Bernie Taupin while he was on the motorway heading to his parents' dwelling; he had to "repeat it to himself for two hours," which was "unfortunate",[6] but in later on interviews he said that since it gave him a hit, it was all worthwhile.

Legacy [edit]

"Rocket Man" was ranked No. 242 in the 2004 list of Rolling Rock'south 500 Greatest Songs of All Time; it was ranked No. 245 in the list's 2010 revision,[7] and 149 in the 2021 revision.[8] The song has been a staple of John's concerts. Amongst numerous other performances, John played "Rocket Man" at the launch site of Infinite Shuttle Discovery in 1998. In tribute to David Bowie after his decease in January 2016, John performed a piano rendition that combined "Rocket Man" with Bowie's "Space Oddity".[9]

Music video [edit]

"Rocket Man" was designated for the animation category, and was co-directed past Iranian refugee Majid Adin and Irish animation manager Stephen McNally;[x] [11] the video was inspired by Adin'southward own migration to England, portraying a character envisioning himself equally an astronaut to draw parallels between the song's lyrics and the experiences of a refugee.[12] [xiii]
